JOHN DRURY CLARK (1907 - 1988) was an American rocket fuel developer, chemist, and science fiction writer. In addition to his work as a scientist, he was instrumental in the broad revival of interest in Robert E. Howard’s Conan stories and an influence on the writing of Isaac Asimov, L. Sprague de Camp, Fletcher Pratt, and other sci-fi authors. ISAAC ASIMOV (1920 - 1992) was an American author and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science books. A prolific writer, he published more than 500 books, most notably the science fiction novels I, Robot and Foundation, and the popular science works, Guide to Science and Understanding Physics.

Eine sehr gelungene Mischung aus Fachwissen, Historie und Humor. Das Buch stellt die Entwicklung von Raketentreibstoffen dar und zeigt dabei auf wie teilweise irrsinnige Anforderung des Militärs auf den Ehrgeiz von "rocket-scientists" oder vielmehr rocket-fuel-chemists trifft und die Chemie an ihre Grenzen treibt. Unterhaltsam und mit Witz gewürzt, werden hier chemische Zusammenhänge, Entdeckungen und Kuriositäten rund um flüssige Raktetentreibstoffe präsentiert. Eine klare Empfehlung
Leider kann ich zum Inhalt wenig sagen, aber mein Sohn, der überwiegend bis ausschließlich englische Literatur liest, weil er vier Jahre in Südostasien in einer englischsprachigen internationalen Schule war, sucht sich immer anspruchsvolle, beste Literatur aus. Deshalb denke ich, dass es ein gutes Buch ist, das Erkenntnisgewinne schafft. Preis und Lieferung wunderbar.
Sometimes it gets very technical. It discusses only the actual propellants and very little else about rocket design except for storage considerations. Most of the fuels and oxidizers in the book are so exotic and expensive that I wonder why they ever considered actually using them. Surely the effort and resources could have been investsd in engineering instead and squeeze performance out that way.
More than you ever wanted to know about the development of liquid rocket fuels. I enjoyed the book, but I guess you need a strong interest in rocket science / chemistry or history of technology. It's not exactly a light read.
Hard to write a review of a book still a unique piece of its kind after 40 years. Check the foreword and everything is clear!
